80s Retro VHS Cassette Cover Designs and Types

VHS cassette cover art has a retro feel that's hard to fake, mostly because most of it really was designed back in the 1980s, right as the format was taking off. Some people write that off as dated. We'd argue it's the opposite, there's a reason nostalgia like this doesn't fade.

One of the more interesting things about these covers is how much they borrowed from whatever was happening in pop culture at the time. A lot of the designers behind them grew up browsing tapes at the local video store themselves, so it's no surprise those same influences worked their way into the covers they later created.

Let's start with the big three: Sony, JVC, and Panasonic. Each one had its own distinct approach to cover design.

Sony

Sony covers tend to keep things simple and clean. Usually there's a single image or graphic front and center, with the title and other details set in a plain, readable font. Every so often Sony would use more than one image, but the layout always stayed tidy.

JVC

JVC leaned busier than Sony. Covers often carried multiple images or graphics along with denser text blocks. Even so, the layouts held together and stayed easy enough to read at a glance.

Panasonic

Panasonic sat somewhere between the two, not as sparse as Sony, not as packed as JVC. Covers usually featured one or two images with some accompanying text, kept small and light on detail.

Beyond the three big names, a few smaller brands are worth a look too, Magnavox and RCA among them.

Magnavox

Magnavox went bold, leaning into color in a way the bigger brands mostly avoided. Covers usually carried several images or graphics alongside modest, understated text.

RCA

RCA stuck close to Sony's playbook, clean and simple, usually built around a single image with the title set in a plain font. When they did use more than one image, the layout stayed just as tidy.
