Ringer Tee vs Raglan Tee: Where Each Came From and How to Wear Them

A ringer tee is a T-shirt with a collar and sleeve bands in a different color from the body. It started in American gym and camp wear in the 1950s and 60s, and has since turned up at rock shows, on thrift racks and at Prada. It keeps coming back.

The raglan is its cousin, and the two get mixed up constantly. Below: the difference, where each came from and how to wear one in 2026 without looking like you're on a softball team.

Ringer vs raglan: the difference

They describe two different things. "Ringer" is about the color of the trim: contrasting collar and cuffs. "Raglan" is about the cut of the sleeve: one piece that runs up to the collar, leaving a diagonal seam from the underarm to the collarbone. A baseball tee is a raglan with contrasting sleeves. So a shirt can be a raglan, a ringer, both or neither.

Where the raglan came from

The sleeve is named after FitzRoy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan, the British commander in the Crimean War. The earliest documented use cited by Wordorigins is an 1854 London tailor's ad for a "Raglan Cape," and the name entered clothing around 1854 to 1855.

The story goes that he lost his right arm at Waterloo in 1815 and the sleeve made dressing easier, though no primary source backs it up. What is clear is why sportswear took it: the raglan gives the arm and shoulder room to move, which is why it became standard in baseball undershirts and jerseys.

Where the ringer came from

Ringers came out of American sportswear, with college teams, summer camps and gyms in roughly the 1950s and 1960s. The contrast ribbing reinforced the spots that wore out first: the neck and sleeves. By the early 1970s they were mainstream casual wear and tied to music. Concert-goers wore them at shows by the Allman Brothers, the Ramones, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and the Sex Pistols, and one history names John Lennon as an early celebrity adopter. Rock bands also sold raglan tees as merch.

The 80s are murkier. One source says ringers faded to thrift racks. Another says they stayed in sportswear and fitness culture. The safe version: the ringer's peak was the 70s, and it lived on in sportswear and thrift bins through the 80s.

The comeback

Ringers revived in the 2000s indie wave, in TV nostalgia such as That 70s Show, Napoleon Dynamite and Stranger Things, and in luxury labels including Prada, Valentino and Miu Miu. That's a lot of range for a shirt that started as gym wear.

How to wear one now

Keep the fit close, not oversized. A medium-weight cotton shirt that skims the body looks deliberate. A tent looks like laundry day.

Go classic with the colors. White or gray bodies with navy, black or red sleeves are the proven combination.

Pair it with the basics. Jeans or chinos, canvas sneakers or boots. Layer it under a flannel or a denim jacket.

Use the seams. Contrast sleeves and diagonal raglan seams are said to broaden the shoulders and taper the waist. That's a style opinion, not a fact.

Our ringer is the Remember Forever Ringer T-Shirt ($60). For raglans, there's the Forever 80s Raglan Shirt ($60) and the Retro Panther Raglan Shirt ($60).

Put it under something

The tee earns its keep when the weather turns. Under a denim jacket, or a windbreaker from The Return of the Windbreaker: How to Style It Now, it's a full outfit with no effort.
