The Sonny Crockett Look: What Miami Vice Actually Put on Don Johnson

The outfit that launched Miami Vice in 1984 was a white linen jacket over a teal T-shirt, worn with no socks. No tie, no shirt with a collar. A cop on prime-time TV dressed like he was late for brunch, and men started copying him.

The show was Miami Vice, the cop was Sonny Crockett and the look is easier to build than you'd think. Below: what he wore, who dressed him and a five-piece version for now.

The rule: no earth tones

Miami Vice premiered on NBC on September 16, 1984 and ran until January 25, 1990. Executive producer Michael Mann set one color rule from the start: no earth tones. Costume designer Jodie Tillen has described the palette as pastel, and Mann wanted those colors to give a feeling of heat. Buildings and cars were matched to the same palette.

Earth tones were out, pastels were in, and a generation of men learned that mint and pink were allowed.

What Crockett actually wore

The famous pilot look, according to the costume site BAMF Style, was a white linen single-breasted jacket with broad lapels and padded shoulders, matching pleated trousers and a teal cotton crew neck T-shirt underneath. On his feet: white perforated loafers, no socks.

That T-shirt under a jacket is the piece people still copy. It looked relaxed and expensive at once.

The other pieces:

Sockless loafers. Going sockless wasn't invented on the show, since it was already a Mediterranean habit. Miami Vice popularized it. Espadrilles also turn up in descriptions of the look.

Pushed-up sleeves. The jacket sleeves went up the forearm. Sources disagree on whose idea that was. Don Johnson has said Miami's heat drove it, and he reportedly dropped belts and socks for the same reason.

Stubble. Johnson explained it as the character being up partying with dealers for days. In 1986 Wahl even sold an electric trimmer called the Stubble Device, at $29.95, to help men copy it.

A gold watch. The pilot used a replica gold Day-Date, so call it a gold watch in the Rolex style.

Who dressed him

Tillen designed the first season. Bambi Breakstone took over from season two. They didn't shop the same way. Tillen leaned toward Versace and has said there was no Armani in her year, because she found it too conservative. Breakstone brought in some Armani but focused on the rising German label Hugo Boss, and the budget was always tight.

The look sold clothes. Retail echoes included Kenneth Cole's Crockett and Tubbs shoes, After Six Miami Vice dinner jackets and a Macy's section for young men. And the look didn't stay fixed: later seasons got darker.

The modern version

You don't need the shoulder pads. Skip the giant ones, pick a slim or relaxed cut and keep the T-shirt heavy enough to look chosen.

1. An unstructured jacket. Linen or cotton, off-white or pastel. A thrift store is the best place to find one that's lived in.

2. A plain crew neck tee. White, or a muted mint, pink or teal. No logo, no graphic.

3. A shirt for the jacket-off moment. At some point the jacket comes off, and what's under it should still earn its place. The Crockett Shirt 1984 ($69.99) is named for the part. The Vercetti Shirt 1986 ($47.99) costs less.

4. Sunglasses. The Ocean Drive Sunglasses 1983 ($29.99) have the right name for it. Wear them outside, like a person who isn't trying.

5. A watch. Crockett's was a gold Rolex-style piece. The Retro Leather Watch 1983 ($49.99) is the low-key alternative.

Roll the sleeves. Wear loafers, with or without socks depending on how brave your ankles are. If sockless feels risky, no-show socks get you most of the way.
