The Sounds That Defined an 80s Childhood

The 80s were mechanically loud in a way that is difficult to describe to anybody who did not live through them. Almost every device made a noise, because almost every device had moving parts.

That produced an audio environment where you could tell what was happening in a house without looking. Somebody was on the phone, somebody was rewinding something, the washing machine had reached the spin. All of it audible, all of it distinct, none of it designed.

Telephones

A rotary dial returning after each number, at a fixed speed you could not rush. Ten digits took real time and you could hear how long a number was from another room.

The bell was an actual bell, struck by a hammer, loud enough to be heard anywhere in a house because it needed to be. Nobody could ignore a phone ringing. It was the most demanding sound in the building and everybody moved when it happened.

Then the receiver going down in the cradle, which was a definite, physical end to a conversation. Hanging up on somebody used to be an act with a sound attached.

Tape mechanisms

The clunk of a cassette deck's play button, which was mechanical and took real pressure. The whir of fast forward, rising in pitch as the spool filled. The clack at the end when it hit the stop.

Rewinding a VHS tape was longer and lower, a steady mechanical drone for a minute or more. Everybody knew roughly how far through a tape they were from the sound alone.

And the moment before audio started: a second or two of tape hiss, then the music. Digital audio has no equivalent, which is why the hiss now reads as warmth rather than as a flaw.

The television

A CRT set produced a high-frequency whine from the flyback transformer, around fifteen kilohertz, which most children could hear clearly and most adults over thirty could not.

Which meant kids always knew whether a television was on. You could be in another room and know that somebody had switched it on downstairs, which was occasionally useful and occasionally got people in trouble.

Then the static discharge when you turned it off, a crack and a click, with the picture collapsing to a bright dot in the center that faded over several seconds.

Doors and cars

Car doors closed with weight. A heavy thunk from a large panel with a solid latch, and every model sounded slightly different. Kids could identify which neighbor had come home from the sound of the door.

Indicators were mechanical relays clicking, not a synthesized tick through a speaker. Seatbelts retracted with a whir. Manual windows had a specific squeak going down.

House doors had letterboxes that clattered, hinges that announced themselves, and locks that took a real turn. Everybody in a household knew who had come in from the sound of the front door.

School

An electric bell in a corridor, painfully loud, with a mechanical rattle underneath it. Chalk on a board, and the specific unbearable version when it caught wrong. A rack of chairs being stacked. A film projector clattering in a darkened room, with the reel slap when it ran out.

Playgrounds had a sound that was pure volume: hundreds of children in an enclosed outdoor space with hard surfaces, producing a wash of noise with no individual voice in it.

Outside

An ice cream van's chimes arriving from several streets away, getting louder, and the specific urgency it produced in every child who heard it.

Bicycle sounds. A card in the spokes, a chain that needed oil, a dynamo whine when the light was running, brakes that squealed.

And the call from a porch at dusk, a parent's voice using a full name across a street, which was the universal signal that a day was over and which everybody could imitate for the rest of their lives.

Why it all went away

Solid state components do not make noise. Once a device has no motor, no relay, and no mechanical switch, it is silent unless somebody deliberately adds a sound.

Which is what happened. Camera shutter sounds, keyboard clicks, the noise a phone makes when it sends something. All of them are recordings of mechanisms that no longer exist, played through a speaker to give a silent action a physical feel.

That is the whole story. We took a hundred years of mechanical sound, removed the mechanisms, and then hired sound designers to put approximations back because a device that does something without a noise feels like it has not done anything.

The originals were not designed. They were the byproduct of a machine doing physical work, which is why nobody who heard them has forgotten a single one.
