Why Leather Jackets Became a Retro Icon

The leather jacket started as safety equipment. Everything people find appealing about it now is a side effect of that.

Early motorcycle jackets were built to survive a rider hitting asphalt. That produces specific requirements: a material tough enough to abrade instead of tear, a front closure that will not open under impact, minimal loose fabric to catch, and a collar that can be secured at speed.

Solve those and you get the jacket everybody recognizes. The asymmetric zip exists so the closure is not sitting directly against the ribs when a rider leans forward. Early aircraft cockpits were open, freezing, and cramped. That gives you a different brief: maximum warmth, minimum bulk at the shoulders and arms so the pilot can operate controls, and a hem that seals at the waist so air does not get in from below.

The jacket got adopted, in order, by riders who needed it, by film characters based on riders, and then by musicians who wanted the association with the film characters.
